What is OKICA?
OKICA (Okinawa IC Card) is a ticket to travel on Okinawa's monorail (Yui Rail) and buses without the need to constantly searching for coins in your wallet.
Pretty much like Octopus Card in Hong Kong, Touch 'n Go in Malaysia or Easycard in Taipei, this reusable smart card is very easy to use. Just touch on and touch off at an OKICA reader as you travel.
You can buy and top up an OKICA from a ticket-vending machine or station counter at all monorail stations (instructions below), sales offices of bus companies (list of offices here - http://info.okica.jp/buy.html) or Okinawa Familymart convenience stores.
Cost of OKICA
When you first purchase an OKICA, 500 yen will be taken as deposit. An OKICA can hold up to 30,000 yen with a minimum top up value of 1,000 yen and maximum top up is 10,000 yen.
If you do not want to keep the card when you leave Okinawa, you may return the card back to the station counter and 300 yen of the deposit (plus balance on your OKICA) will be returned to you.
Types of OKICA
- Unregistered OKICA
- Registered OKICA
- OKICA for People with Disabilities
- OKICA for Students
The unregistered OKICA does not require an application to record your details but can not be re-issued if lost.
How to use OKICA
For monorail riders, each time you enter or exit a monorail station, you must touch on at the OKICA reader.
As for buses, simply touch your OKICA on the gray OKICA reader as you board the bus and don't forget to touch it again when you get off.
